AND THE DEVIL LAUGHED

So once again it has happened this time in Manchester, England.  Manchester that solid working class city, now the second city of England, the evil losers have struck with an explosive device.

NAUTICAL LOG remembers it some 60 years ago British people with a very distinctive accent and expressions.  That of course has changed considerably with the influx of persons from former British Empire countries such as India, Pakistan, Ceylon and the West Indies.  Add in numerous others due to the European Union with its unwise indeed foolish "open borders" policy.  What has resulted is no doubt something NAUTICAL LOG would not recognize from 60 years ago.  Yet when push came to shove and this tragic disaster occurred after a pop princess's concert the working class spirit of Manchester came into action with exemplary behavior of hotels and residents opening theirs doors and hearts to help with shelter, food and communications.  There were videos of heavily armed Police Officers with arms around terrified young children, the pop princess's principal fans, comforting them and keeping them  safe from further harm.

Sadly though this was after the initial incident.

There were TV interviews where persons said that concert security ranged from non-existent to casual and relaxed which seems strange even extraordinary. You see it now turns out that the person who set off the IED was well known to the British and European counter-terrorism authorities.  Warrents have already been executed, his father and brothers have been arrested with the cooperation of Libya by those same British Authorities, others are being searched for.  One has to wonder how easily this evil loser planted and exploded the IED in a public space between the Victoria Street train station and the Manchester Evening News Arena.  One has to question could it have been prevented?  No doubt someone will have to explain all this and no doubt disciplinary action will take place within the British Law Enforcement Authorities involved - it is already being discussed by British media outlets.

So sadly therefore the evil loser who clearly targeted the young persons leaving the concert was successful as others all over Europe and America have also been to date.

So the evil loser having been killed by his own IED presented himself for his reward as he had been told he'd receive,

And the devil laughed.

HOW TO WEAR A LIFEJACKET

A popular U.S.-based cruise ship style
A popular European ferry style

Several times during the year NAUTICAL LOG has had visitors searching for lifejacket instructions. With two just over Christmas we decided to publish something for everybody to see and read.
Choose a Coast Guard approved life-jacket and make sure it is undamaged. Make sure life-jackets are readily accessible, never locked away. Check the fit, there are adult, child and infant sizes, the correct one MUST be used. Choose bright colour life-jackets so as to be seen easily by Search and Rescue (SAR).Put your life-jacket ON BEFORE you leave the berth. Make sure you have a light and whistle attached AND they BOTH WORK.

CHARTERING - TYPES OF CHARTERS

Voyage Charter:

A contract (C/P) for hire of the use of a vessel to make a specific voyage between two identified terminal ports. The vessel will be carrying cargo or passengers for and on behalf of the Charterer's. The Charterer's pay for the the use of the ship either on the basis of a lump sum or in the case of cargo at a 'Freight Rate'. This freight rate is so much per tonne carried and delivered. This would not be the form of charter normally used in the business of yacht chartering.

Time Charter:

A contract (C/P) for the hire of the use of a vessel for a specified period of time and can take one of two basic forms,

* Basic Time Charter
* Demise or Bareboat Charter

The Basic Time Charter;

An agreement between the owner of a vessel, or if allowed the disponent owner, and a charterer who wishes to use the vessel for his own purposes without being responsible for the operation of neither the vessel or its day-to-day management.
Throughout the period of the charter the owner/…

PAINT LOCKER FIRES

The photographs above are revealing in several ways, lets have a look. Clearly the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) vessel JS "Kurama" impacted the Korean container ship MS "Carina Star" just aft of the turn of the fo'cs'le on the Starboard side. Please note that's the Starboard side, thus it appears JS "Kurama" would have shown "Carina Star" the red port sidelight and "Carina Star" would have shown JS "Kurama" the green starboard sidelight. This impact point would tend to suggest that JS "Kurama" was the 'stand-on' vessel and the MS "Carina Star" is the 'giving-way' vessel. Until there is a complete plot of the tracks made good of both these vessels and the position in the Kanmon Strait of the point of collision no determination can actually be made.
As a result of this impact there was severe bow damage to JS "Kurama" and in addition a massive fire occurr…
