Once again some news from the Antarctica came into NAUTICAL LOG this morning. The Antarctic adventure cruises ship MS Polar Star has hit a rock off Detaille Island, Lallemand Fjord, Leubet Coast at 66 degrees 52 minutes South latitude, 66 degrees 48 minutes West longitude. She was able to work herself free however the outer hull was holed, due to being double-hulled she is floating on the inner hull and no oil spill is reported however booms have been deployed. It is further unstood she is receiving assistance from the Ejercito Argentino.
Search and Rescue is in the hands of the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) at Punta Arenas, Chile. The Navies of Argentina and Chile jointly patrol Antarctica within the framework of an Joint Agreement.
There are 80 passengers and 35 crew aboard the 250 foot Bahamas Flag State vessel which is owned and operated by Karlsen Shipping of Halifax, Canada. She was cruising from Ushuaia, Argentina on ten day adventure cruises.
